Hi, I’m Taylor.
I'm a senior at Broughton High School in Raleigh. Most afternoons I'm at a law office, learning how a case gets built before anyone sees a courtroom. I'm headed toward political science, and after that, law school.
My Story (So Far)
Where I Come From
I grew up hearing stories about two very different stages in my grandfathers’ lives. One was the farm, where discipline, patience, and responsibility shaped each day. The other was a band stage, where music brought people together and confidence filled the room.
From the farm, I learned that leadership begins with consistency. From music, I learned that leadership requires courage and presence. Those lessons shape how I approach my roles today, whether serving in church leadership, having captained my lacrosse team, or stepping into professional internships.
Growing as a Leader
Throughout middle and high school, I have sought opportunities to lead in spaces that matter to me, especially within my school and church communities. Each role has challenged me to listen more carefully, take responsibility for outcomes, and support others even when the work happens behind the scenes.
Leading and Serving
-
Legal Internship
I help attorneys and paralegals prepare active cases by organizing files, assembling documents, and sitting in on client conversations. It has taught me that most of law is quiet, careful work done long before a hearing.
-
Deacon Leadership
Elected by the congregation as a sophomore, and one of a small number of students asked back for a third term. The role means showing up for people during hard weeks, often with nothing to offer but attention.
-
Pharmacy Internship
Two summers at a veterinary pharmacy, where the patient can't tell you what hurts and everything you know arrives secondhand from someone who is partly guessing. I got good at building an accurate picture from an incomplete account.
-
Captain & Competitor
Captained JV lacrosse team, and a qualifier for the North Carolina DECA State Career Development Conference. Both taught me that preparation is most of the performance.
Experiences That Shaped Me
Travel, near and far
From the Grand Canyon to Costa Rica and Italy, traveling has widened what I understand about culture and community. Mostly it has taught me that curiosity grows the moment you step outside what's familiar to you.
Adversity off the field
After serving as captain of the JV lacrosse team, a knee injury ended competitive play for me. Losing the ability to compete challenged how I thought about myself as an athlete, and forced me to rebuild what leadership looked like somewhere other than a field.
A cold email to The New York Times
I wanted to know what a career in writing actually looked like, so I emailed the paper's theater editor and asked. What began as a message I assumed no one would answer turned into a Zoom conversation about journalism, storytelling, and how careers really get built. It taught me that a thoughtful question opens more doors than a good résumé does.
